Outreach to the local community is a very important part of our ministry. But we also do outreach to far-flung areas to help those in need. The following are some of the activities in which we regularly participate.
Food Bank: Monthly - we collect distribute food for locals in need.
Feed the Children: Monthly - 3rd Friday - Each month we feed families from our community with a meal that our members prepare and serve. We help and support the children of these families with school supplies, shoes, haircuts, backpacks.
Mentoring - Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Outreach mentoring program is a combination of group mentoring, activities, and tutoring. It is a needs based program designed for the children in our community. The goal of our program is to expand visions and possibilities for those in the program.
We have 10 children enrolled in the program from ages 9-17. The first activity took place over 2 afternoons. The activity was “Let’s do Dinner” and involved figuring out what items were needed to prepare dinner for 38 people, how to budget and shop for the items needed, and how to make and serve the dinner. The children learned how to look at prices at the grocery store and figure out how much food was needed to prepare the appropriate amount. Serving sizes, price per pound, dollars per person, were all new concepts to many. We used teams to shop and prepare the meal. The response from the group was very positive and the activity seemed to be enjoyable, helpful, and fostered independence.
The next activity was to create an inspiration board. Each child received a corkboard and was guided on how to create a board with positive visions. At the start of a new school year the power of visual intention can be helpful to remember what is important. Thrivent helped fund this event with boards, craft supplies, t-shirts, and after school snacks.
In addition to the group activities, our own congregation has some excellent volunteers who will be tutoring children in math and reading. The tutoring begins August 31st, 2016.
Bethlehem Ministry - a non-profit created to help Haiti's poor
Boy Scouts - We sponsor the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Crew
Labor Day BBQ - The first Sunday of September local area churches put on a barbeque in downtown Blue Ridge to raise money for the Good Samiritans of Fannin County. This group helps those in need pay some of their necessary bills if they fall short. The 2015 BBQ served over 2100 meals.
